The Sapphire is a prized gem in the family Corundum. It forms in hexagonal prisms
and may be found in an extremely limited number of locations in the United States,
including Montana and North Carolina. Though blue is the colour most commonly associated
with Sapphires, they come in a staggering array of brilliant hues. The other famous member
of the Corundum family is the Ruby. Sapphires may contain tube-like inclusions which give
a valued Star or Cat's Eye effect.
The word Corundum derives from the Sanskrit Kuruvida, or Ruby.
